Where We Are - near Cairnryan Ferry

Rickwood House Hotel is in Portpatrick, near Cairnryan and Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland. We make delightful stop-over accommodation for the Cairnryan to Belfast ferry. (Loch Ryan Port about 20 mins.) We are also ideally placed for visiting the Mull of Galloway.

From the North take the A77 (Stranraer) from Glasgow.
From the South take the A75 (Stranraer) from Dumfries.

Approaching Portpatrick on A77 from Stranraer or Cairnryan, fork right at War Memorial into Heugh Road.

After approximately 1/2 mile turn right at the crossroads up Golf Course Road. The entry to Rickwood is first on the left on the road to Portpatrick Golf Club.

At any time of the day, you can relax in our conservatory or enjoy the famous Portpatrick sunshine, perhaps with a cooling drink, in our grounds.

Children of all ages are made very welcome at Rickwood House. We can supply a cot and high-chair if required.

We also welcome pets by arrangement.

Rickwood is ideally situated overlooking the village of Portpatrick and the Irish Sea yet is only a few minutes walk from the harbour and waterfront and handy for Portpatrick Golf Course.

Mountain Biking

The 7 Stanes at Kirroughtree near Newton Stewart is a World Class mountain biking centre with trails ranging from beginners up to seriously challenging. Bike hire, a tea room and car parking is available at the centre which is only about 40 minutes by car from Portpatrick. If you have your own bike, we can provide secure storage. If you don't fancy biking, it is still worth a visit as there are ample forest walks with great scenery and wildlife such as red squirrels to be seen. There is also a 7 Stanes centre at Glentrool which is a good base for the noviced and also is the starting point for climbing the Merrick, South Scotlands highest mountain.

Walking near Portpatrick and the Mull of Galloway

Portpatrick makes an ideal base for the walker with cliff top walks both north and south, various walking opportunities at the Mull of Galloway, climbs up the Merrick and other Galloway Hills and walks in the Galloway Forest Park. Activities in and around Portpatrick,Stranraer and South West Scotland


For the visitor to Portpatrick, there is no shortage of things to
do and see. The village itself offers bowling, putting,
tennis and golf.

We are adjacent to Portpatrick Golf Club who offer discounted green fees for guests of Rickwood. Reductions are also available at Wigtownshire County Course. Other courses within a few miles are-Creachmore (Stranraer) and Lagganmore (near Portpatrick).

Portpatrick is at the start of the Southern Upland Way which
begins with a spectacular cliff path northwards. Going south,
another cliff path soon takes you to the ruins of Dunskey Castle and leads on to Portpatrick`s famous Knockinaam Lodge Hotel..

In Portpatrick there are superb restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. We also have well stocked gift and craft shops including the ever popular Lighthouse Pottery which is a favourite with all of our guests.The Port Pantry is a particular favourite of ours. It has a gift shop, a cozy cafe with excellent coffee and home baking and doubles as a bistro on weekend evenings.

Our harbour is ideal for a lazy time watching boats, including the Portpatrick lifeboat coming and going. A few miles away from Portpatrick, Stranraer offers more restaurants and gift shops, including Baxters & Gallery 34.

Portpatrick is an ideal centre for visiting gardens. We have more gardens nearby than in any other part of Scotland. Highlights include Logan Botanic Gardens near Port Logan, Glenwhan Gardens and Castle Kennedy Gardens.  Within walking distance from Rickwood Guest House are Portpatrick's own Dunskey Gardens which include the only hedge maze in South West Scotland. There's also the Aldouran Wetland Garden at Leswalt.

Those seeking a beach can find miles of sand at nearby Sandhead and a must is a visit to Scotland's Lands End, the Mull of Galloway for unrivalled coastal scenery and views to Isle of Man, Cumbria and Ireland.

Dumfries and Galloway is famed for its food. There are smokehouses nearby at Colfin or slightly further afield at Marrbury whilst a visit to Cream o' Galloway Visitor Centre is not to be missed. Castle Douglas, has many specialist food shops.

If you are travelling to Portpatrick from the South or East, why not stop for a coffee on the way at Marrbuy's tearoom and shop at Carsluith Castle, just before Newton Stewart.

Other places of interest are the Logan Fish Pond near Port Logan (where 2000 Aces of Sky was filmed), the Gem Rock Museum at Creetown and the distillery at Bladnoch. Scotland's Book Town, Wigtown is only an hour away as is the romantic Culzean Castle. and of course Whithorn, the Cradle of Christianity.
