Portpatrick News Update April 2019

Some interesting things have been happening in and around Portpatrick over the last few months.

Perhaps the most obvious is that Campbell’s Restaurant is now renamed Connor’s! Yes, Robert and Diane Campbell have decided to retire after 20 years and the restaurant has been taken over by a local couple John and Kirstyn Connor. John Connor had been a chef at Campbell’s for many years and more recently at Henrys Bay House Restaurant in Stranraer. John has now taken over the kitchen at the former Campbell’s while Kirstyn attends to front of house. We had an evening meal in Connor’s recently and were delighted that the high standards set by the Campbell family are being continued. In particular, the Portpatrick Crab starters were amazing!”

Remaining on the food theme, we understand that Steve Stringer who runs angling charters form Portpatrick Harbour has a new boat called Rainbow. So, as well as the fishing charters from Lucky Dip 11 , Rainbow will be used for catching mackeral, crab and lobster and other fish which will be sold locally – further details will follow a soon as we have details.

The popular Carolyn’s Kitchen has relocated form Portpatrick Harbour to outside the ruins of St Andrew’s Church – see signs on Main Street. Chip Ahoy is currently trading from outside Lochans Village Hall.

Finally, work has been going on at the old harbour sheds between the Bait House and the RNLI Shop. The row of buildings are being converted to provide new community facilities. Part of the building will be used to provide washing, drying and other welfare facilities for visiting seafarers and the wider community. There will also be storage and workshop areas. Update August 2019 – Buildings opened at an open day but not yet in use – a great effort and work done very quickly.

The main space however is to be converted for use as a Heritage Centre or information Room on demand. The project is expected to be competed later this year and we will update you when more details are known.

The new build house at North Witch Rock, Portpatrick, is to be featured on Grand Designs on 4 September.
